"Coffee Talks" of Santiago Ramón y Cajal

saw the book in a stack Donceles balance and bought it because it cost 20 pesos. Also, because I have another of this collection the same time, also printed in Buenos Aires in the same paper yellowed with age, and I read with pleasure a little over five years: Baudelaire Ruano Gonzalez ... This is the second edition of Austral, 1943, of a book originally published in 1921, when the great English scientist was about to be seventy. With the sole exception of the shirt, who lost in a previous life to it-which is not much to lose if one considers that over half a century ride in the world, the specimen is well preserved and no signature, scratch or notes ...
Then I changed my tactic: I left visible and at hand and began to peck all day, it is true that no order or direction, only by the habit of doing. On one occasion, a phrase I accompanied the rest of the day and when I wanted to reread it the next morning it was hard to find it again. I slipped between the pages of the volume a pencil with which I began to mark the phrases that I liked and they seemed interesting. Fifteen days later, the term used to cajaliana, which among other things illustrated with examples from botany and zoology, case histories and classical quotations, I thought it was more reasonable to start with the principle and thus what I read until the end ... without realizing it.
The Ramón y Cajal of this collection of observations, thoughts and aphorisms is a paragon of common sense and wit, installed naturally in coffee, the zoo of the most representative native species from the more or less reasonable to the downright bizarre. He explains in the preface to the first edition of his book is "a collection of fantasies, musings, comments and judgments, sometimes serious, sometimes humorous, for some years caused by hot coffee and stimulating atmosphere." He says the ideas who brings his personal experience on the issues it deals with ("friendship, ingratitude, selfishness, women, talent, love, morality and politics"), are imbued with classical reminiscences and lists with the names of Plato, Cicero, Plutarch, Seneca, Theophrastus, Lucian, Quevedo, Gracian, La Bruyère ... Going against the general trend of our countries, not just lavish in autobiographies, Mr. Santiago was also a memo he wrote and published the story of his life.
Above all, never stopped to think: even in 1934, the year of his death, was born The World Seen at eighty . Assens Cansinos says the wise "attended his decrepitude and death as a curious observer and unemotional" ('s novel a literary 3, Arts Alliance, number 5033, 2005 edition, pg. 416-417). (On that same page, the teacher says the old Borges Cajal was a little "ankle" and he says, to the extent that his womanizing "minor" problems brought to the police ... "thing, I confess makes me even more sympathetic to the wise old man). In order to share their reading with fans of Century in the breeze, I made a selection of some of the pieces that I like a book that accompanied me during the latter part of the year that ends this week.

Christmas Innovation in Islam

A large number of Muslims today, especially those living in Christian countries or those strongly influenced by Western culture, have come to believe that part of the celebrations Christmas with friends and relatives is a harmless pastime or a form of entertainment for children and adults.

In many cases, the pressure to accommodate the practices of the society is too great for those of weak resolve. Parents are often tempted to yield to the entreaties of her children who have been invited to a party or are unable to understand why they can not enjoy the holidays they observe around them or why they can not receive gifts on such occasions as the other children.

In fact, the Christmas season has been aggressively promoted by merchants, schools, in every public place. The high-pressure tactics of the sales have invaded the homes through television, radio, magazines and newspapers, captivate the imagination with all sorts of attractions, day and night, throughout the year.

Among earlier generations, Christmas was an occasion that had a largely religious. Gifts, trees, decorations and feasts assumed a minor role. But now all that has changed. As highlighted in an American publication, Christmas has taken over many other aspects of society, becoming an element in the cultural background, which allows each station manufacturers and traders make millions of dollars through an elaborate system of gift exchange.

The idea is commonly accepted that happiness is derived largely from possessions and that entertainment is the driving force behind month long preparations and festivities continue until year's end. This, despite being objectionable in itself, has managed to capture many Muslims in the delusion that Christmas is a religious occasion and therefore does not conflict with Islamic belief.

The materialistic atmosphere surrounding the celebration of Christmas is actually a manifestation of pagan culture (Jaahiliyyah) at its best . This can only be perceived by the Muslim conscious as a frantic race designed and implemented by Satan to make a big waste of time, effort, money and resources, while countless families can barely survive in a state of extreme poverty in many regions world.

In addition to the commercial side of Christmas, though less obvious to the casual observer, there are certain religious aspects that should be noted. The celebration was and remains a Christian practice as marking the birth of Jesus, peace be upon him, who is considered by many as "God incarnate" or the second person of a trinity, and so they celebrate the birth of "divinity." The word itself is an abbreviation of "Christ Mass", ie sacrament commemorating Christ. Although has been adopted by Christians to celebrate the birth of Jesus, the actual date of the celebration, on December 25, appears only around the fourth century after Christ. Ironically, this day is also considered the birthday of Hindu god Krishna, and Mithra, the Greek god of light. It also coincides with the Tree Festival, held annually for a long time in northern Europe before the Christian era, and has recently been revived in some Arab countries in an attempt to encourage the celebration disguising the religious significance of it.

The Christmas tree is the most obvious aspect of this pagan celebration, which was built along with its completion date, December 25, to the rites of the church. The pagans, before the Christian era, believed that the pine, because it keeps its green spikes during the winter months, she had special powers of protection against the forces of nature and evil spirits. The end of December marked the beginning of a visible lengthening of daylight hours: the return of heat and light, and defeat the evil forces of cold and darkness. At a particular stage of development, the church is known for taking some of the popular pagan practices into Christianity for political or social reasons.

Thus, in some ways more than others, Christmas is deeply rooted in the worship of different forms of creation rather than the Creator same. A Muslim can not adopt such beliefs or practices from them. Anyone with the slightest knowledge of Islam reject insurance kufr (disbelief) and shirk (idolatry or associating partners to Allah) in all its forms. Only through ignorance or neglect can anyone continue to participate in activities that reflect the acceptance of both. Muslims must be firm in rejecting everything that is contrary to the concept of "La ilaha il Allah, Allah" (there is none has the right to be worshiped except Allah).

Consideration for others is good, but with the proviso that Islamic principles are not compromised. Allah, Exalted and Glorified be He, says (what means in English): {And if you obey those who are most of the earth [the unbelievers] will lead thee away from the path of Allah ...} [Quran 6:116]

And Order: {Follow what has been revealed from your Lord, and do not take any protector beside Him ...} [Quran 7:3]

Although some, in all honesty support its continued weakness against peer pressure, others defend their participation by using the excuse that part of the occasion out of respect to 'Isa (Jesus), peace be upon him, a Prophet of Islam. If such a practice, with the appearance of Islamic atmosphere, is invalid for the Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam, how then can be reasonably valid for other prophets who did not practiced or encouraged such practices, which were devised later by who abandoned the prophetic teachings to follow their own inclinations and preferences?

{Have you not [O Muhammad] from those who follow their passions as if they were a god? Allah decreed by His divine knowledge that go astray ...} [Quran 45:23]

Once again, the Muslim must remember the hadith where the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam, warned of imitating the unbelievers, and encouraged them distinguished in dress and manner.

Whether taken from a materialistic point of view or religious, Christmas can not take place in either the heart or the Muslim home.

Any Muslim, young or old, who has a safe place in a community or Islamic group that has regular activities and is a source of fellowship, will find little difficulty in rejecting what is harmful to himself and his family, despite the apparent attraction. In some countries, denial and resistance may require a true jihad, but those who seek the acceptance of Allah and fear Him, will overcome the task with the knowledge that they are working for their salvation, and so be firm and resolved. Allah, Blessed and Exalted, calls believers saying (what means in English): {O you who believe! Ward off yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is men and stones ...} [Quran 66:6]

And Paradise is achieved by avoiding Hell.

The best fasting after Ramadan is Muharram

Question

What are the days when one should fast during the month of Muharram?

Fatwa
Praise be to Allaah, Lord of the Universe. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sal-lal-lahu 'alaihi wa sal-lam, is His servant and messenger.

is not obliged to fast any day of Muharram, while the 'Ulama' (scholars) disagreed on whether it is obligatory to fast 'Ashura' [the tenth day of Muharram] before imposing Ramadan fasting or not, with two views. Anyway, after imposing the fast of Ramadan, it came to the conclusion that it is favorable to fast 'Ashura'. The scholar Ash-Shawkani, may Allah forgive him, said: "Ibn 'Abdul Bar forwarded the scholarly consensus about that now is not obliged to fast, but is recommended."

The evidence it is recommended that voluntary fasting in the month of Muharram is the following Hadith in which the Prophet, sal-lal-lahu 'alaihi wa sal-lam, said: "The best fasting after Ramadan is the month of Al Allah, (called) Al Muharram, and the best after the obligatory prayer is the volunteer of the night. "[Muslim, Abu Dawood, An-Nasa'i, At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah]

Tasu'a is favorable fasting '[the ninth day of Muharram] with' Ashura 'fasting' Ashura 'with a previous day and another post, and fasting one day earlier or a day after , to counter and the method of the Jews. O also holds fast 'Ashura' alone.

The kind of sins are expiated by fasting the day of 'Arafah and' Ashura '

Question

atones "fasting the day of 'Arafah and' Ashura '[the tenth day of Muharram] mortal sins?

Answer
praise be to Allah, Lord of the Universe. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sal-lal-lahu 'alaihi wa sal-lam, is His servant and messenger.

Abu Qatadah, may Allah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet, sal-lal-lahu 'alayhi wa sal-lam, said: "I hope that Allah, Glory Be, Do that fasting the day of 'Arafah atone for the sins of previous and subsequent years, and I hope that Allah, glory be, Make the fasting of 'Ashura' atone for (the sins committed in) the previous year. "[Muslim]

An-Nawawi, may Allah forgive him, commented on this hadith saying:

" That means you expiate the sins of two years who fasted that day. The scholars said that this refers to minor sins. And that was explained earlier, in discussing the atonement of ablution sins, when we mention that if there are minor sins then be expected to reduce the punishment of the grave, and if no serious sins, then the reward will increase in degree. "
This demonstrates that the sins alluded to in the Hadith are the children, not serious, since the latter require repentance.

The story of' Ashura

Muslims must be afraid of Allah and draw lessons from what Allah has told us in the Noble Qur'an with regard to the Prophets and Messengers of Allah and the former nations.

Allaah Says (what means in English): {Verily, in the story [of the Prophets] there is a lesson for the equipped with sanity. It is not [the Koran] a tale invented, but a confirmation of what was revealed before, and is a detailed explanation of all things, guidance and mercy for believers.} [Qur'an 12:111]

Y between the stories that Allah has told us in His Book is what occurred in the month of Allah, the holy month of Muharram, and is the story of Prophet Musa (Moses), peace be upon him, and Pharaoh, the tyrant of Egypt. Allah, the Almighty, He said (what means in English): {I narrates part of the true story of Moses and Pharaoh, and [to benefit] who believe. By the way that Pharaoh was a tyrant on Earth. Inhabitants divided into classes and enslaved a group of them [the Children of Israel], killing their sons and sparing women, and certainly that was a spoiler. And wanted grace to those who were enslaved on Earth and turned them into exemplary leaders and successors. We gave them power over land [of ancient Syria and Egypt], and we made the Pharaoh, Haman and their hosts see [a reality] they feared.} [Quran 28:3-6]

domino Pharaoh people of Israel and enslaved them, killing their newborn sons and sparing women. The reason why he committed this criminal act was the fear that the truth came to light through one of those newborns. The people of Israel knew, according to what they were transmitted by the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), peace be upon him, that someone of her lineage would destroy the king of Egypt. This good news was famous among them and became known to Pharaoh. Then he ordered his soldiers to kill all newborn children of Israel in order to keep safe from destruction.

However, all the precautions taken were not sufficient to protect what Allah wanted, which was that the newborn baby to be brought up in the house of Pharaoh himself. The Will of Allah can not be stopped by no precautions, and His Power conquer anything. So, Allah decided that the safe birth of Prophet Musa, who escaped being killed, but also being raised in Pharaoh's home, under the protection of Allah until he was adult.

Later, Musa, peace be upon him, he accidentally killed one of the people of Pharaoh. Then, he was afraid of being caught and killed by this, so I fled to the land of Midian. He lived there for some time, married and returned to Egypt. On the way back, Allah will speak (by revelation) and he said that he was a Prophet and Messenger to Pharaoh. Allah gave him many signs by which would be recognized as the Prophet of Allah.

Musa, peace be upon him, went to Pharaoh and showed signs of Allah, but Pharaoh was arrogant and proud. Allaah says (what means in English): {I ratio [O Muhammad] the story of Moses: When his Lord called him in the Sacred Valley of Tua [and he said:] Go to Pharaoh, has exceeded it, and say: Do not want to purify? Then I will show you the way of your Lord so that you are pious. And he showed the greatest miracle [the rod became a serpent and hand out white and bright after it has been introduced by the collar of his robe]. But the Pharaoh denied and disobeyed. Then he turned back and continued to corrupt the earth. And called [His army] and said, I am your Lord supreme.} [Quran 79:15-24]

Pharaoh claimed that the signals brought Musa, peace be upon him, were just magic he had magicians outweigh the magic of Musa. So Pharaoh gathered magicians of his kingdom and had its magic. Musa, peace be upon him, showed signs that Allah had given him.

Allaah Says (what means in English): {And We revealed to Moses, "Throw your stick, and void what they did. And he revealed the truth and so vain that they had done [because it was just an illusion]. And were there defeated [the magicians] and were humiliated. And the wizards fell down [at seeing the truth]. They said: We believe in the Lord of the Universe, the Lord of Moses and Aaron.} [Quran 7:118-122]

At that time, Pharaoh decided to try a different plan, involving fear, force and vengeance. Allah ordered Musa, peace be upon him, to pull out all the believers of Egypt and brought them to Allah to show him. Pharaoh gathered his army, which consisted of about one million soldiers, according to some references, and chased Moses and its people in the hope of destroying them completely. Musa, may Allah be pleased with him, he reached the sea with Pharaoh and his army behind him. The believers were afraid because the sea was in front of them and the enemy back.

Allaah Says (what means in English): {And when the two saw each other, the followers of Moses exclaimed: We will be achieved! Said [Moses]: No, we do not reach! For my Lord is with me, and he told me [what to do to save].} [Quran 26:61-62]

Allah never Abandon Him who is close to Allah ordered Musa, peace be upon him, it hit the sea with his stick. So he did and the sea opened for them to cross. Allaah says (what means in English): {said to Moses, [saying]: Travel by night with My servants, and opened [by My will] the sea leaving a path of land [where they will flee Pharaoh and his army], and I fear not reach nor drowning.} [Quran 20:77]

Musa, peace be upon him, walked along the path that had opened in sea \u200b\u200bwith his people to reach the other side, then all Pharaoh's soldiers began to cross as well. At that time, Allah ordered the sea to collapse on them, drowning Pharaoh and his army.

That was the victory of truth over falsehood. The prophecy of Allah came true: He gave the victory to the people of Musa, peace be upon him, upon Pharaoh and his army. In this story, we can see how the truth always comes out victorious in spite of the power that can be or appear to falsehood. Falsehood is a time limited, but the truth is always victorious.

This story should enrich the hearts of believers and give strength to his enemies, no matter how strong they may seem. The believer must also benefit from this history to understand that the people of the false claims that they are in the right way and they are calling people to the truth. In fact, it is exactly the opposite: they are relying on lies and deception.

This great event-the victory that Allah gave Musa, peace be upon him, and the believers over Pharaoh and his army, occurred on 10 of the holy month of Muharram, and that day is called 'Ashura. This is a day that has great merit. The Prophet Musa, peace be upon he fasted on that day and ordered his people to fast.

Also, we benefited from the story of Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, learning that it is Sunnah of the Prophets thank and glorify Allah in times of peace and when you get the victory over the enemies. The Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, fasted on day 10, the day when Allah gave victory to his followers about the Pharaoh, and this is another sign that truth and falsehood always win.

A "red Palinodia" anonymous

When two months ago announced the imminent appearance of red Palinodia , my new book of poems, I should take into account the cluster of unforeseen circumstances which often determine almost any human enterprise. Again I forgot that enthusiasm, one of my most acute ailments, dangerously blind its victims. But the printer, certain accidents of his biography and the poor quality of some services, all added to the speed with each passing day, were in charge of returning a more accurate view of reality.
important thing is that, although the publisher Aldus begin shipping in February, the book is already printed and light.
On the way to fifty years, has long since ceased to frighten the delay maybe because I have the impression that always accompanied me. So much so I think I arrived a little late to almost everything. I am consoled by the longevity of my paternal family, and Fernanda Santos, my grandparents, lived 96 and 93, respectively, my uncle Florentino, 90 ... That means that if you do not live all that I will not be for lack of time . As usual, the unknown variable puts my mother's side: my mother's father did not exceed fifty-six years, which barely exceeded his wife ... Anyway, I like to think that I look to Spain, in the words of my Menéndez Pidal admired a country of late fruits.
prematurely Shortly after announcing the release of my book ( http://bit.ly/gK042J ), an anonymous author sent me a poem also called "red Palinodia." The way the text came to me prevents me solve anything with absolute certainty: a plain envelope that was given to me while crossing the street from the Nile River one afternoon when returning the mail, a girl of flexibility and feline look, nothing unless mounted on a scooter-like we're in an Italian Tuscan city and not in the street Pánuco of Cuauhtémoc in Mexico City ... - which, as he walked away without waiting for any reaction of my hand, spoke a sentence that did not understand in a clear South American accent.
The poem is written in imitation of Gerardo Deniz, by now an old acquaintance of readers Century in the breeze. When I told her what happened, the poet, stung by curiosity, I asked to see the mysterious text and with their help I could understand almost every detail. Do not judge me harshly for wanting to lay it in a comprehensive manner: the poem, which had two or three passages incomprehensible to me, was a source of possible explanations. The exercise has been worthwhile to see Almela again in action but also because the text seems to confirm that there is something called deniciana school, contrary to what I have always maintained. In the poem below and copy it in the comments that follow means what I mean.

red Palinodia
14-XI-10,
8-9 am
not sing that, red, because it is unusual.
Just some nerd ask forgiveness for you,
but most will receive serene
and do well. darkly know
that, although a few give any pain,
in retaliation do a lot more burning [confidence of two]
and put a fascinating turning
in delightful female breaths.
Show off best, red, that was the doppleriano,
bathochromic shift of spectral lines
together to you
first revealed the expansion of the universe
(which is not a minor issue.)
think also, O red, if your name Russian
blends with the beautiful
(which is, of course, what people believe slug)
is something, "Tell me, who vehemently accuse still
to always red was dressed
and whose eyes, dark theobroma desired
still carry in my heart drawn.
Not to be neat, well, oh your poet sees red
confident that help him in his triangulation
divine the topography of a snowy white Chaco
pray for us reds and greens,
and by some unfortunate Rangoni.

is well known that Deniz, a poet full of hidden events, winks and references in poetry there is nothing to "explain." At most you can make lists of ingredients. With that statement opens the preface to Tours. 36 poems by the author commented (Gatuperio Publishers, 2000) and Wednesday evening of my visit is shown true to her to comment on the text that I put forward. One thing stands out: beyond their first curiosity, the matter does not produce any reaction in him. Who wrote the poem? Why, in imitation of his style? How what purpose did I get here? None of that seems interesting.
The first part offers no problems: the anonymous author begins speaking directly to red, alluding to the phrase "recant the dictionary defines as" publicly recant, and, by extension, to acknowledge the error own even in private. " Immediately, for my tastes disconcertingly jumps to the topic of menstruation. It may be worth commenting on the phrase "put a fascinating turning / in delightful female breath" with which Almela, smiling, seems to agree because I asked, "Have you noticed this phenomenon? "and without waiting for my reply adds:" It's foolproof. Of course, the volume change much, we would say. In some cases it shows little, in others, miserably. "
"And do you think that nice? - Ask me.
-How.
- Why good? Is it a welcome change?
"Well I'll tell you. To ... rare. But yeah. Unmistakable.
Then we got to the first I do not understand "that apparently only happens to those who walk bare-scientific knowledge:" Show off better, oh red, that was the doppleriano, / bathochromic shift of spectral lines / in all to you / it first revealed the expansion the universe. " When I read the passage, Almela smiles again: those are areas that are known. He explains that he was, indeed, the "shift of spectral lines" to the red that first allowed us to propose that the universe is expanding ( http://bit.ly/erZYFh ).
My ignorance is not so as not to know what the doppler effect -now that I think, if I let you understand what I told the messenger of the scooter may have been because and walked away-but not enough to have no idea what I explained below.
"In terms of light, the effect is the same. And in the case of stars that are receding from us, the wavelength of light "estiiiira" and the spectral lines are shifted, ie, they run away ... When he was running towards the red , having longer wavelength longer than the other end of the spectrum, which is purple. Then red light, we would say, right? That can only be explained by the light source is receding. And as that shown by all the galaxies in all directions, is that space is expanding and increasing the distance of each with respect to all ... The shift to longer wavelengths is called bathochromic shift ...
The same reaction will produce the passage that follows. At this point I think that if the text was written, obviously, along the lines of his writing, at least judging by the ease with which the poet glosses the result is perfect:

think also, O red, if your name Russian
blends with beautiful
(which is, of course, what people believe slug)
is something, "Tell me, who vehemently accuse still
which was always red dressed
and whose eyes, dark theobroma desired still carry
Drawn in my gut.

"Yes, that is," he says. Red Square, for example, is the Plaza "Bella" ... In Russian, "red" and "beautiful" have the same root.
- "This is not what people believe slug ...."
"Then shall the Communists, right? ... [Laughs]. Yes, that seems to say something like "tell me red to me, apart from the bullshit of the Red Army and the red flag, I do know red ... for the reasons outlined there. "
- Do you know what are the theobroma?
"Well, yes, is the scientific name for cocoa, Theobroma cacao . "Theobroma" means "food of gods." And yes it is ... [laughs] I today I ate a chocolate lollipops water and even that paltry thing I knew it ... [Laughs]
- And the triangulation? What is the topography that divine?
-Triangulation is that to raise levels hypsographic, ie heights and depths and all ... You know, the theodolite, looking to see distance, angle and light, thus forming triangles. The triangles, trigonometry, after several steps and give you a plane deep. If you can not also be flat, well, the ups and downs of the land ... their profiles. That is the "triangulation", which is how they did at first maps. Now from a satellite [irreproducible sound] ...
- What do you think the adjective "divine"?
-Interestingly I have used repeatedly. I put out there somewhere "So-divine." Is that this "divine" fuck me ...
-Dice "pray for us reds and greens."
"Yeah ... I guess you mean by everyone.
"Ah, yes, the reds and greens and blues and violets ...
" Apart from that green is the complementary color of red.
- "So Rangoni as some unfortunate .... "
-Rangoni is a character in Boris [ Godunov], Mussorgsky ... appears only in the third act ... the melody is also very fascinating [the hum]. It is very pretty. Only appears at the very end of that act and is in the love scene of the false Dmitri and Marina Mniszek in the garden ... the song still sounds Rangoni, you just say to Marina before, he must be ready for anything in the name of God. She was shocked at first but he replied that "nothing, nothing, so is this religion ..." [Laughter].
- What could that mean the reference to Rangoni?
- [Laughter] Maybe because Rangoni is promoting the union of Polish Catholics with the Orthodox Russians, and expects that a Catholic Tsar (the false Dmitri convinced by him and Marina, his wife) to require turn Catholicism in Russia rather than orthodoxy. This means that in its possibilities, that fail to sing, further ... a link.
"That will have to do then, I venture, with reference to the Chaco, the" whitest Chaco " I know it is a province in northern Argentina. I knew you years ago a writer who was there and I even read his book.
"Oh no" answers Almela, cutting-exhaustive and there yeah you know ...
Will I know? When leaving your home that Wednesday, I had something like a vision, parked a few meters from my car, I saw a scooter identical to that driving the girl handed me the poem. I could swear it was the same. What was there, the afternoon of my meeting with the poet? The find did nothing but fill new suspicions. All I know is that everything points to the River Nile and meeting the girl of South American accent. As you can see, I'm far from solving the riddle, it is not unlikely that the thing would still something of themselves. If you have something to report, I promise to do so immediately.

Witty Comments To Put On Wedding Shower Card

The soundtrack of a life (second of two parts)

Last week I began counting ten songs that I have been with some memorable moments of my life as I did for Laura's radio program that airs on Barrera Horizonte, the season of the Mexican Radio Institute. In presenting the last Sunday I referred to a first group of songs that cover the years from 1976 to 1992. These are those who complete the list.

6. "This book can." Buena Vista Social Club presents Ibrahim Ferrer , Ibrahim Ferrer (1999)
1999 was the closest thing to an annus horribilis for me. I was more solitary than ever, I became particularly irritable, enflaqué to be in the bones. Then I got involved with strangers, obsessed with death, and walked to his side of that year and the next perhaps only to understand a proverb I read in La Celestina: "Lost is the one who lost after walk." I ran my steps leading to a lost corner of the Mexican province, Rincon de Guayabitos, where, so to speak, I hit bottom. Three years ago, like millions of people around the world celebrated the appearance of album Buena Vista Social Club . Among the group of musicians brought together by Ry Cooder, from the beginning I was moved particularly Ibrahim Ferrer: his voice, his biography, his infinite tenderness.
Soon after, in 1999, it became his first single disk, of which my favorite song is the powerful "This book can", which has the charm of being an exact tracing the version recorded by Benny Moré and Banda Gigante in 1957. The producers of the radio link came up with the start of the original version with the continuation of the other and the result is the film footage of those that begin in black and white and color change without the eye to perceive the trick. In this album echoes much of what I experienced that year and in particular the end of the century days when my track is lost among strangers at a spa thought the Nayarit coast.

7. "Mozambique." Desire, Bob Dylan (1975-2002)
In 2001, in agreement with Sergio Autrey, who a year earlier I had bought eighty percent of the shares of the publishing house that was Conversely, I decided to close the magazine I founded in 1992. Shortly after I went to Spain with the intention of taking a sabbatical. I told in this place that the road to Madrid, where you plan to install, I was invited to honor a former teacher in a village in the mountains of Asturias, where I realized that my destiny was not in the land but eventually my mother and three of my four grandparents. I rented a studio at the Plaza del Sol, in the heart of the old Oviedo, and a year later I moved to an apartment in a building facing the Campillín.
Besides mine, I had at least one other " home ": a bar in the corner of Old Town called The Parages , where I spent some of the most memorable evenings of the time. Although I always had sympathy for Dylan, this song, which identify with those nights, was what made me a fan: his guitar, beautiful backing vocals by Emmylou Harris, violin ... In that same disc is which for me is the most beautiful song in the history of rock: "Oh sister". However, if I am inclined to "Mozambique" is because it resonates better than any other Susana laughter, conversations with Bolo or Pancho and the fierce loyalty of Thomas, as part of my happiest memories of about five years I lived in the old Vetusta.

8. Duet "Wir Eilen mit schwach, doch emsigen Schritte" of the cantata "Jesu der du meine Seele" BWV 78. 6 Favourite Cantatas , JS Bach. The Bach Ensemble, Joshua Rifkin (1998-2004)
In 1991, thanks to a proposal by the poet David Huerta, I was invited to spend a year at Bucknell University in the state of Pennsylvania to work as an adjunct professor (teaching assistant ) of the Department of English. Perhaps the most famous graduate of that university on the banks of the river Susquehanna is none other than Philip Roth.
to Madrid I met Xavier Pascual Aguilar, * since one of my best friends, who I caught his boundless, voracious and almost reckless love of music: They Might Be Giants, The Stone Roses, Paul Weller, Hoodoo Gurus, The Smiths ... the end of that school year I had become almost as addicted as him, I prepared to enter (once back in Mexico) to musical world of Sergio Vela, who had known a decade earlier in high school and who have been close friends since then.
recently, Sergio, perhaps the person most knowledgeable of music in Mexico ( www.sergiovela.com ), gave me a wonderful box full of discs of Haydn, Liszt, Beethoven , Respighi, Strauss, Chavez ... I have not even finished reviewing. Although it might put some other example I have chosen this duet of the famous number 78-cantata called something like Jesus, Thou my soul because I identify with the general air of the piece and I love the interplay of voices full of charm and alternating contrapuntal.

9. "Calle Real." real Street, Camarón de la Isla, Paco de Lucia and Tomatito (1983-2006)
During the time I lived in Oviedo somewhat cooled my enthusiasm for flamenco . Could not be otherwise, considering that great is the lack of interest in the phenomenon jondo in the frozen north. But the music of southern origin as a child I felt terrible ended up playing an important role in my hobbies perhaps because it represents a part of my roots, my maternal grandfather was a Andalusia. There's something about the beauty and character of my mother who is not exactly his native Asturias, which is in my brother and my two sisters and can not only come from Andalusia.
Beyond my Mexican nationality, something that must have influenced I have felt, despite what was generally comfortable in Oviedo, Asturias and outside Asturias. Could it be that I identify as Hispanic in southern Spain before? It is no one can doubt the powerful allure of the great Camaron de la Isla, who knows him and his voice and jondura brought flamenco to modern sensibilities, it's hard not be passionate about his work . After a couple of records I stole from my father in the late eighties, during the last decade I have made a long and joyous flamenco recordings. If you choose "real street" is because the fandango de Huelva is a "stick" and easily recognizable, which makes it suitable to start a taste of the mysterious genre, and especially in Huelva was born precisely because my grandfather, José María Figueroa Monís. Perhaps because of all that, better than anyone else this music is for me the Spain that, without being fully aware of it, for years slept under my skin.

10. "Hopefully that will be nice!" José Alfredo Jiménez. Things heart, Oty (2006-2010)
Despite its name vallejiano, my Otilia not born in Santiago de Chuco or Lima ( http://bit.ly/bv99D5 ) but in Oviedo, in 1944, where eighteen years later she met my father, and after a brief courtship they were married and nine months and one day later, Mexico where they ran to settle, had me. One of the oldest pictures I have of my Otilia is that of the fledgling English with dazzling guitar in his arms with his grace in the northern English emigrants serious among them came to live in a repertoire were songs that she and they brought with them to America, but also the Mexican who learned in Spain even before their migration and has never ceased to play with their pronunciation from there, adding a nuance of phrasing invaluable here.
In 1997, using the easy access to new technologies and yielding to an old idea made his first record, Go and show me a site This experience then repeated twice: Oty sings Asturias in 1999, and Things of the Heart - perhaps his best work, in 2006. Some friends helped me to frame my Otilia talent (in the photo is a gala dance in the late eighties to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer) in these three albums that followed, as the photographer Adolfo Pérez Butrón or designer Soren Garcia Ascot. When preparing this list, I asked him what meil of songs from his latest album was put on the show, and she who first told me the one I chose, he snatched the word itself and wrote: "Would you be nice" by José Alfredo Jiménez. One way Hispano, and therefore very own, to make a passionate end.
